Despite there being no jackpot winner, one lucky player from North Carolina still became a millionaire after matching five main numbers to scoop the $1 million prize. However, because the player had also chosen to play the Megaplier, the prize was trebled to $3 million and the lucky winner has wasted no time in claiming his prize.
Everette Sloop Jr. of Rockwell, Rowan County, purchased his ticket from the Kangaroo Express on East Main Street and has become North Carolina’s biggest non-jackpot Mega Millions prize winner in history. Sloop had opted to play the Megaplier feature for an extra $1 and, as Megaplier number 3 was drawn, his initial Match 5 prize of $1 million was trebled.
Sloop was sitting in his car on Saturday morning when he checked his ticket and realised he had won. “I walked out to the car to call the lottery hotline because I don’t get very good reception inside the house,” he told North Carolina lottery officials. “I listened to the numbers and just sat there. I called five times just to make sure I had really won.”
Sloop’s winnings, after state and federal taxes, are estimated to be worth just over $2 million and he plans to use his wealth to buy a car for his mother, a new home and, most importantly, to take care of his family.
“I have the best family anyone could ask for,” Sloop said. “It feels great to be able to take care of them. I’m going to start a college fund for my children. This is just wonderful.”
LotteryWorld wishes Sloop and his family all the best with his lottery win.
