Wednesday September 4th, 2013 – A Crest Hill resident’s habit of buying a Lotto ticket every time he stopped for gas has finally paid off.
Last month, the lucky winner Xuan Ngo Thu purchased a Quick Pick Illinois Lotto ticket from a Speedway gas station in Joliet which landed him with a $5.7 million jackpot.
Thu wasn’t aware of his win until the day after the drawing when he returned to the store to have the ticket checked. After scanning his ticket the message “file a claim” flashed up and the clerk told Thu that it meant he had won “something big.”
Too nervous to check the ticket himself, he returned home and got his daughter to check it. She found that the ticket was the only one to match all six numbers – 11-15-29-41-42-43 – in the Illinois Lotto drawing on August 15th, 2013. After his daughter told him he hit the jackpot Thu was so excited and couldn’t sleep for days.
Earlier this week Illinois Lottery officials confirmed the winning ticket and Thu, a Vietnamese native, came forward and collected his prize. He opted to receive his prize in a lump sum of $3,906,785, which equates to $2,734,749 after taxes.
Thu plans on sharing his win with his family, donating some money to charity and a vacation to Vietnam.
The Speedway gas station will receive a $57,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
