Tuesday October 29 2013 – The California winner of the $213 million Powerball prize has still not come forward despite almost a week passing since the jackpot was won.
This was the first jackpot Powerball win for a Californian resident since the state joined the game back in April and is the third biggest lottery jackpot ever won in the Golden State.
The Top Two..
The state’s biggest lottery prize was won by a syndicate from Anaheim who won a $315 million Mega Millions jackpot on October 19 2005. At the time, this was the second biggest jackpot ever to be won in the United States. The syndicate members, who worked at a Kaiser Permanente medical center, celebrated their new found fortune by buying lunch for all their colleagues.
Holding second place in the California Lottery win table is Jacki Wells Cisneros, who won a $266 million jackpot in May 2010. Long-time NBC-LA newswoman Cisernos found out she had won the jackpot after one of her colleagues handed her a copy of the news report they were due to run stating that the winning ticket was purchased in her hometown of Pico Rivera. Since her win, Ciserno has established the Gilbert and Jacki Foundation to support Hispanic students, with particular emphasis on those studying broadcast journalism.
The owners of the stores which sold those winning tickets also cashed in as they each received half a percent of a winning jackpot prize, up to a total value of $1 million, in commission!
The retailer bonus scheme also means that Fast N Easy store owner Vikram Vohre (pictured below), whose store sold the $213 million winning Powerball ticket last week, will also benefit from a cool $1 million windfall. Vohre says the money will help them open even more stores in the area.
Despite already owning 21 stores in Fresno, Vohre says this particular store, located on East Shields Avenue, is his “lucky store” after already selling a $20,000 winning scratch off, a $10,000 lottery prize and others worth several thousand dollars.
The winning Powerball ticket was sold on the same day of the draw and was one of 150 sold by his employee Lali Dhaliwal that day. Although Vohre won’t speculate on the identity of the winner, he has said it is likely to be a local person as the majority of their customers are from the neighbourhood.
So if you are a Fresno resident or you know a friend or family member who is, make sure you and everyone you know has checked their Powerball tickets as someone out there is worth $213 million! The winning numbers can be viewed on Powerball.net.
