Final Third of the $448 million Powerball Jackpot Paid Out

Powerball NewsTuesday August 27 2013 – The last third of the $448 million Powerball jackpot which was shared by three ticket holders on August 7 2013, has been paid out to South Brunswick winner Mario Scarnici.

Yesterday, the New Jersey Lottery officially confirmed that Scarnici had visited Lottery HQ to claim his prize with his wife and two adult children also in attendance. It is unlikely that the Scarnini family will release any more information or hold a formal press conference, although they did chat to lottery officials when claiming their check.

In a press release from the NJ Lottery, long term lottery fan Scarnici confirmed he always bought his lottery tickets from the same Stop and Shop. “I go in the store and buy a newspaper and lottery tickets,” he said. Prior to the Powerball game on August 7, Scarnici bought three Quick Pick Powerball tickets for the $448 million draw, one of which hit him the jackpot.

He said he and his family were “thrilled” by the win, and although they had no immediate plans for spending, he did confirm he will be giving a share of his $62 million post tax prize to his children.

Stop and Shop staff are also thrilled by the win, and even more thrilled that the winner came forward to claim. “We were happy first of all that we sold it,” said Jose Perez, night manager of the store in a telephone interview with Yahoo News. “We sold a ticket before but nobody claimed it.”

The store have pledged to give the $30,000 retailer bonus to charity, following in the footsteps of the Acme store which sold the other jackpot winning NJ ticket to the Oceans 16 syndicate.

Lottery officials were pleased to confirm that the winner of the $19 million Mega Millions jackpot on July 26 has also come forward to claim their prize. Barbara Matta and Karl Herkert from Kearny, NJ, purchased their winning ticket (which stands to net them over $9.4 million after tax) from the Dollar Subs store in Hudson County after buying five Quick Picks.

They are the fourth Mega Millions jackpot winners from the state so far this year, making 2013 a bumper month for the NJ Lottery.
