Sunday March 16 2014 – The Mega Millions jackpot now stands at a huge $400 million after 20 successive draws without a top tier winner. Excitement surrounding this Mega Millions jackpot is building as this is only the seventh time in US lottery history, and only the third in Mega Millions history, that a jackpot has reached the $400 million mark.
The only US jackpots to surpass the $400 million mark are:
1 – $656 million Mega Millions jackpot won on March 30 2012 by three ticket holders from Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.
2 – $648 million Mega Millions jackpot won on December 17 2013 by Steve Tran from California and Ira Curry from Georgia.
3 – $590.5 million Powerball jackpot won on May 18 2013 by Gloria MacKenzie from Florida.
4 – $587.5 million Powerball jackpot won on November 28 2012 by a ticket holder from Arizona and another from Missouri.
5 – $448.4 million Powerball jackpot won on August 7 2013 by one ticket holder from Minnesota and two ticket holders from New Jersey.
6 – $425 million Powerball jackpot won on March 18 2014 by a single ticket holder from California.
In Friday’s draw, five ticket holders narrowly missed the top prize as they matched all five main numbers (7-20-40-54-69) but not the Mega Ball number (12) to each win $1 million. The winning tickets were purchased in Arkansas (1), Florida (1), Ohio (2) and Virginia (1). However, the winning ticket holders from Arkansas, Florida and Virginia opted for the Megaplier so their win tripled to $3 million as the Megaplier number drawn was 3.
Virginia lottery officials have been quick to release details of their $3 million winning ticket and confirmed yesterday that the ticket was purchased from the Elden Market & Deli on 1141 Elden Street in Herndon.
With a $400 million jackpot at stake, participation for tomorrow night’s draw is likely to be high so we advise players to have their tickets ready in plenty of time to avoid the long queues and last minute rush.
