Sullivan County in southern New York State may be one of the luckiest places in the country as a second Mega Millions jackpot winner came forward in the space of two months. Tammy Pratt, a real estate broker from South Fallsburg, claimed her $126 million prize at Monticello Raceway and Casino after matching all five main numbers and the Mega Ball in the drawing held on Friday, February 27th.
Pratt decided to buy a ticket for the draw after noticing that the jackpot had exceeded $100 million. While she typically only buys a single Quick Pick, she mentioned in Wednesday’s press conference that she “just had a feeling [she] should get more than one.†That gut feeling served her well – she matched the winning numbers of 7, 49, 53, 60 and 64 with Mega Ball 4 to pick up a life-changing prize.
Pratt has opted to take the cash option of $81.6 million, taking home around $54 million after taxes. She plans to put some aside for college tuition for her children, after which she will “take some time to think about the future.â€
Her victory is preceded by that of retired teacher and New York resident Harold Diamond, who emerged in January as the winner of the draw held on Tuesday November 4th 2014. His $321 million windfall is the largest lottery prize in the history of the state.
Mega Millions is back tonight with a jackpot of $51 million (estimated cash value $32 million). If you’d like to learn more about the game before buying tickets, visit the Mega Millions informational page at Lottery.net.
